TOP STORY >>Patriot Day a day to reflect

Note: Speech delivered at 9/11 Remembrance ceremony.

On Sept. 11, 2001, at 8:46 a.m. the world changed, the country changed, and individual lives changed—never to be the same again. Lost in the terror attacks that morning were nearly 3,000 Americans: wives and husbands, mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, friends and co-workers.

The loss was felt by every American and by our friends around the world. I'm sure that most of you have a very personal story about where you were, what you were doing, and how you felt when you became aware of the attacks.

The attacks had a profound affect on every American. Therefore, it was only fitting for the President to have signed U.S. House Joint Resolution 71 into law designating Sept. 11 of each year Patriot Day.

On this day, the U.S. Flag flies at half staff on all federal government buildings and installations in remembrance of the Americans lost in the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the airliner brought down in Pennsylvania.

They have joined the league of American Patriots who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the country and freedom.

Today, we remember them as Patriots.

Patriot is defined as "one who loves, supports, and defends one's country." All who have lost their lives in service to our great nation deserve the title “Patriot”.

Their families who have endured such great loss deserve the title “Patriot”. All standing here this morning are deserving of the title "Patriot" because you answer the call of duty each day. Our families are deserving of the title "Patriot" because they serve by our side supporting us each day. Our friends in the local community are deserving of the title "Patriot" because their love for this country shines bright in the outstanding support they provide the warfighter. So as you go about your duties remember the Patriots — those who have passed and those currently serving in and out of uniform.

The highest honor we can pay our Patriots is to renew our determination and commitment to winning the Global War on Terror.

At Little Rock Air Force Base, we pay tribute to them through our commitment to providing our nation with an unparalleled Combat Airlift capability. The Combat Airlift mission, the one you execute with so much skill and professionalism each day, is vital to national security. You honor yourselves and all Patriots with your service.

Thank you for all you do for your Air Force and your nation.

Combat Airlift!
