TOP STORY >>'Their sacrifice...Our freedom'

By Brig. Gen. (S) Wayne Schatz
314th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Little Rock Air Force Base Airmen come together to recognize the sacrifices of America’s Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action in a ceremony at 11:30 a.m. today in Hangar 1080.

Today’s event will specifically honor the extraordinary efforts and heroism of seven Arkansans who were former POWs. Survivors Audrey Harris, Silas Legrow, Marion Morgan, Wayne Elliott, Homer McNew, Thomas Bonds and David Boland are the embodiment of the warrior spirit each should strive to uphold.

These men are heroes who survived the rigors of war and personify the values we all hold dear as Combat Airlifters. Their bravery and sacrifices are of legends. Their legacy is a standard for which we all should uphold.

We must never forget the sacrifices of our POW/MIA comrades. They are a reminder that our freedom is not free, but is paid for through the sacrifices of all America’s warriors. These gentlemen are the true definition of heroes.

We’ll gather together tomorrow night at 6 p.m. in downtown Little Rock at the State House Convention Center to honor many other heroes at our Air Force 60th Birthday commeration. Gen. Norton Schwartz, Commander U.S. Transportation Command, will be our guest speaker. Kim and I look forward to joining you for a fun evening of fellowship and celebration.

Today, we are fighting a Global War on Terror and many of us will be put in harm’s way defending the values we hold dear. I’m proud to serve with you as an extension of their legacy. We will not forget. Combat Airlift!
