Combat Airlifter
of the Week

Col. Mark Vlahos, 314th Airlift Wing vice commander, presents Capt. Kyle Bate, 314th Communications Squadron, a commander's coin for being selected as the Combat Airlifter of the Week during a presentation held April 28. Captain Bate was selected as Combat Airlifter of the Week for his duties as chief of maintenance, squadron deputy commander and for his performance in preparation for the operational readiness inspection.

After World War II, the Walnut Ridge Airport was one of several bases used to melt down airplanes for their precious metals. Museum officials estimate that between 10,000 and 11,000 planes were disposed of at Walnut Ridge alone, some leaving directly from production lines to the airport.
