Team Little Rock History Fact of the Week
301 days to go until LRAFB turns 60!
On Dec. 10, 1941, Capt. Colin Kelly Jr. assigned to the 14th Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bombardment Group, dropped three 600 pound bombs from a high altitude on what was believed to be a Japanese battleship. After observing a tremendous explosion, the crew assumed that at least one bomb had struck the ship and had likely destroyed it. While returning to Clark Field in the Philippines, the crew came under attack by Japanese Zeros. Kelly stayed at the controls of the badly damaged aircraft while the surviving crew members bailed out. Kelly and his co-pilot, Lt. Donald Robins, attempted to escape. However, the plane exploded and ejected both men. Robins opened his parachute in time. Kelly hit the ground without opening his. In the rush to publicize an American victory in the war’s early days, the details of Kelly’s sacrifice were unintentionally exaggerated and garbled. Kelly became the first American popular hero of World War II due to the reports of his supposed actions that day. Kelly received the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroism for the belief that he had damaged or destroyed a battleship and for also sacrificing his life so that his crew could live. Instead of hitting a battleship, Kelly’s crew had actually hit a Japanese cruiser, the Nator. (Courtesy photo)
